On November 7 Joe Biden was declared the winner of the US presidential election. I anticipated people might take to the streets in celebration so I went downtown to the Boston Common. A big group of people began to coalesce at the intersection of Boyleston and Tremont, occasionally blocking the street and then letting the cars through single file. Most of the people in cars were also celebrating, waving flags and honking. Eventually someone brought a big speaker, and the champagne began to flow, and everyone was dancing.
I was not really enthusiastic about Biden, and I suspect alot of people in the crowd weren't really either. But this symbolic changing of leaders brought out a lot of strong emotions and I couldn't help but be swept up in it too. We all knew that Biden wouldn't solve our problems, but for one night we partied in the street as if we had won the war.
The fact that our world continues to crumble unabated doesn't take anything away from my joy at seeing these pictures. Everyone has delusions that keep them moving and living and this happened to be a very large delusion that we all got to share, and that's the best we can do as dumb animals stumbling through this world of suffering.
